My grandmother spoke with customer sevice today and she asked why some dolls have zippers while others have strings. The CS lady said it was because too many doll's heads kept falling off.
Thanks for asking them! That explanation makes sense! I use zip-ties a lot for pet-related projects. They are amazing things because you can pull them as tight as humanly possible, and they stay "locked." I guess there's often a stigma attached to "natural" (cotton (?) strings) versus "man-made" (plastic). But it does make sense in that the dolls don't fall apart.
I've never had trouble with the dolls I've had (six non-zip-tie dolls going back 16 years), so it makes me think lately they must not be pulling the fabric strings tightly enough.

Probably true!
I prefer the zip ties because I have to tighten up the strings all the time. I've had to tighten Marisol 3 or 4 times already!
Yeah. If I wasn't so into making over my girls, I would have zip ties instead of strings. The strings get in the way and get stuck to the velcro.
I feel kinda silly for asking, but I've never seen a doll with a zip tie. Does anyone know where I can see a picture of this? Or can someone please post a pic? I'm really curious to see these now!
They're pretty "invisible" compared to the ones with strings. I put together a doll with a zip tie, so can explain it.
What they do is, instead of stringing string through, they string a zip-tie (cable-tie; you can see one by visiting a hardware store and asking to see them. The ones used for dolls are sometimes narrower, though). Then, after completely pulling it as tightly as possible, the end is snipped off, mesh with the place where it's tightened.
The dolls themselves look the same from the back, but instead there is a zip-tie holding the head on. It won't necessarily show up very well in a photo.
By the way, I looked at Kit to see if I could take a photo of it for you. Then I noticed my Kit has strings! And all this time I've been thinking and posting otherwise.
All of my dolls have strings, and I've NEVER had to tighten any of them up except Marisol, the newest! She's the only one with the "Y" on the back, too.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Lol, thanks anyway, Melissa! So the zip tie girls don't have any neck strings at all? That's nice for the aesthetic value. I think one of Marisol's dance outfits has a low back to it and I bet it would look so much better if there weren't any strings in the way. But, I think I prefer having the strings so I can easily take heads on and off if needed. Originally posted by Melissa:

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">You know what I've always wondered.. When the bodies became tan, why were the strings STILL white? Tan strings would have shown up way less and done the same job.Originally posted by ksami:
